Resume Help For Any Struggling Job Searcher

Here's a little resume help, if you're having trouble landing that job interview.

The first bit of resume help has to do with your e-mail address. While there is nothing wrong with using a free e-mail service as your personal e-mail address titles like TooCool4You@yahoo.com or PartyDude@hotmail.com are not going to impress an employer. Or, rather, they will impress the employer - negatively.

If may seem obvious, but you need resume help no matter who you are. If you are a professor of English you still need someone to read over your resume and proof it for grammar and punctuation errors and typographical mistakes. It's just a fact of life that we don't pick up our own mistakes nearly as often as we see those of others. Get resume help in the form of editing assistance. Don't ever rely solely on your word processing software's spell check.

There are some common forms of resume help online in the form of pre-packaged resume templates. While these can help you format the structure of your resume they should not be used so obviously that your resume looks like a template. You must have some resume help that assists you in designing a unique document - unique to you and unique to each particular job.

If you're long winded, or just have the habit of falling in love with your own words and find it hard to be succinct you should seek resume help with condensing the information. Unless you are seeking a top-level executive position your resume should not exceed one typewritten page.

Help For Resume Bloopers

What's important to remember is that everyone, no matter how adept they are, needs resume help. The best resume help may, perhaps, be pointing out the most common resume mistakes. Knowing what bloopers to avoid can help you construct a dynamic resume.

The worst mistakes that most novice resume writers make is to write a resume whose focus is not clear, to design a resume that doesn't help put you across as an expert in the field for which you are applying but rather as someone with a smattering of training in several fields. Another way your resume doesn't help but instead hinders your job hunt is by writing the resume so that it focuses more on the duties of each former position rather than highlighting your achievements in the position. Using the wrong resume format is another way your resume can hinder rather than help. If you have gaps in your job history it's best not to use a chronological resume, for instance.

Too lengthy a resume can be a big mistake as well or, on the other hand, trying to include all-important information on one page by crowding or make the point size too small. This does not help your resume - it hinders it.

The best resume help is to get you to understand the concept behind your resume - to portray yourself as human capital, a product that the employer, the buyer, needs. If you can think of your resume as an advertisement of your product that is so effective that the consumer, the employer, will want to purchase it, you have mastered the best resume help there is.
